Interactive STEM Project

Eco Park

Design a modern eco park

The city council has asked the class to design a new eco park. Six teams each take on one zone, use geometry and scale to plan it, suggest an eco-friendly idea, and then assemble the whole park together.

How the activity works

The lesson is a seven-step mission. Teams work on their own zone first, then the whole class brings the park together.

  1. Choose a zone

Each team takes a role, from water engineers to urban planners, and a zone of the park.

  2. Do the maths

Teams calculate areas, volumes and scale for their feature. Answers are checked automatically.

  3. See it in 3D

Correct answers unlock a 3D model of the feature, built from the team's measurements.

  4. Build the park together

The class places every feature on a shared map, meets a green-space rule and presents to the City Council.

Maths and skills

Maths covered

  • Area of circles, triangles, rectangles and composite shapes
  • Volume of a cylinder, a triangular prism and a cuboid
  • Surface area of a pyramid roof, a sphere and a cone (formulas provided)
  • Scale: converting real measurements into map squares
  • Percentages: extra material and the share of green space
  • Units and sensible rounding

STEM and problem solving

  • Applying maths to a realistic design brief
  • Suggesting and justifying an eco-friendly engineering idea
  • Teamwork: agreeing a shared plan and sorting out conflicts over space
  • Explaining design decisions to an audience

Teacher guidance

The lesson includes a full teacher guide with differentiation notes and an answer key. Open it from the For teachers button at the top of the lesson.

What you need

  • One device per team (laptop or tablet) with an internet connection
  • A calculator for each team
  • One shared screen for the final mission, such as a projector
  • No printing or preparation of materials is required

Running the lesson

  • Split the class into 6 teams of 3–5 students.
  • In about 40 minutes, focus on the team tasks and a short final mission. With 80 minutes, give the final mission and presentations their own session.
  • Teams 3 and 4 are the most accessible; Teams 2 and 6 are the most challenging.
  • Team 5 coordinates the final assembly of the park.
  • Team 6 receives the sphere and cone formulas in an engineering data sheet, so no prior knowledge of them is assumed.
